Congratulations to the recipients of our 2013/2014 $500 Scholarships!
The Southern Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce has awarded $500 scholarships to graduating seniors at Solanco and Lampeter-Strasburg high schools. The Solanco recipient is award-winning art student Jani Hileman of New Providence who will attend the Maryland Institute College of Art. The Lampeter-Strasburg scholarship recipient is Gabe Rowe of Strasburg who will attend Azusa Pacifica University in California.
The following criteria is used to determine the scholarship recipients: cumulative GPA of 2.5 or better, leadership skills in school, participation in extracurricular and/or community activities, and plans to pursue a career in business. Applicants must provide a short essay to answer one of the following questions: "What do you see as the biggest challenge to business in Southern Lancaster County and how would you recommend overcoming it?", or "If you were to start your own business today, what are some challenges you could face over the next three years and how would you overcome them?".
The Southern Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce obtains much of the funding for the scholarships through its annual shredding event. This year’s community shredding event will be Friday, June 6 from 2 to 6 p.m. at G.R. Mitchell Inc., on Beaver Valley Pike in Willow Street. Local businesses, organizations and residents are invited to bring their sensitive and confidential paper-based materials for shredding. The shredding will be conducted by Blue Mountain Document Destruction. All shredded material will be recycled. Donations are encouraged and will be used by the chamber of commerce to help fund the annual college scholarships.
